The Department of Community Medicine, Al-Azhar Medical College & Super Specialty Hospital, Ezhalloor, Thodupuzha, in association with Joint Effort for Elimination of Tuberculosis (JEET) and District TB Centre, Idukki,organized a CME on “Tuberculosis Updates -2019” for the medical practitioners in the public and private sectors on 06/03/2019. The main objectives of the programme were to give update in the recent changes in TB diagnosis and treatment guidelines to the medical practitioners and to increase the participation of private practitioners in reporting of TB which in turn helps in eliminating the TB in long run. Travancore-Cochin Medical Council has awarded Two Credit Hours for the CME vide letter No C2-03154/2019/MC/CME dated 16.02.2019.
In this CME, a total of 58 participants have attended.
The inaugural function was held on 06/03/2019 from 9:00 AM to 09:30 AM at Lecture Hall 3, Al-Azhar Medical College & Super Specialty Hospital.
The programme started off with welcome address by Dr.Sandhya GI, Professor and Head, Department of Community Medicine. Next the Inaugural Address and Presidential Address was delivered by Dr.Syamalakumari G, Principal,Al-Azhar Medical College & Super Specialty Hospital who highlighted the importance of TB burden in the world and India and importance of RNTCP in eliminating TB. Then there was felicitation by Dr Arshad Kalliyath, Consultant, State TB Cell and Dr Anoop K, District TB Officer, Idukki. The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr.Bablu Raphael, AssistantProfessor, Department of Community Medicine.

Topic: Challenges In The Battle Against Tuberculosis
Resource Person:Dr. Sandhya GI, Prof& Head, Dept. of Com. Medicine, AAMC.
The scientific session started off with introduction and history of Tuberculosis by the speaker. The speaker also briefed about the challenges faced in tackling Tuberculosis in India and especially in Kerala.

Session 2 – 10:45AM to 11:45 AM
Topic: Recent Updates in RNTCP Guidelines
Resource Person: Dr Anoop K, District TB Officer, Idukki.
In this session, District TB officer in detail explained about recent changes of RNTCP diagnostic algorithms and treatment guidelines. He also briefed about the importance of reporting TB cases by private practitioners and also explained how to use “Nikshay” website/mobile app to report TB cases by private practitioner.
Session 3 – 11:45 AMto 12:45 PM
Topic: Kerala TB Elimination Mission
Resource Person: Dr. Arshad Kalliyath, Consultant, State TB Cell.
In this session, speaker explained the reasons for starting Kerala TB elimination mission. He also explained about the what are targets, milestones to be achieved under Kerala TB Elimination Mission and steps to be taken by public and private practitioners in attaining the targets. He also explained about TB and HIV dual burden in India along with TB and Diabetes dual burden in Kerala and India.

Topic: Drug Resistant TB
Resource Person: DrShinoby Kurian, Consultant Pulmonologist, District TB Centre, Kottayam. In this session, speaker explained in detail about the guidelines to be followed to declare a TB case drug resistant and which treatment to follow for the drug resistant TB both for adults and pediatric cases. Also explained about the MDR, XDR and TDR TB and treatment guidelines to be followed for the same.
Session 5 – 02:30 PMto 03:30 PM
Topic: Role of Private Sector in TB Control
Resource Person:Mr. Rakesh Ramachandran,State Lead (PPM), Joint Effort for Elimination of TB (JEET).
The speaker briefed about the importance of private practitioners in eliminating the Tuberculosis from India and role of private practitioners in achieving it. Also, explained about the incentives providing from government to the practitioners for reporting of TB cases and incentives for the patients completing the treatment. The speaker explained in detail about STEPS (System for TB Elimination in Private Sector)
After this, there was discussion between resource person and participants to clarify the doubts and to address the practical difficulties faced by the practitioners in following the RNTCP guidelines.
The programme ended with taking feedback from the participants and certificate distribution.
